Jicama is an edible root vegetable native to Mexico. In Central America, jicama is often sold by street vendors and commonly eaten raw, and seasoned with lemon or lime juice and chili powder. In the United States, however, jicama is less common. 

You can find jicama year-round in the produce section of most supermarkets and Latin American markets. When purchasing, select firm, dry jicama roots. The skin should not appear shriveled, bruised, or blemished. At home, keep jicama unpeeled in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Did you know Jicama contains important vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, folate, potassium and magnesium? It also is low in calories and high in fiber and water.

Jicama also contains antioxidants, including vitamins C and E and beta-carotene. And although Jicama looks like a potato, the flesh of this starchy vegetable has a sweet and nutty flavor.

Jicama Fries with Tahini Dip

Ingredients

Spicy Jicama Fries –

  • 1/4 Jicama, peeled and cut into fries
  • 2 tbsp avocado oil
  • cayenne to taste
  • smoked paprika to taste
  • garlic powder to taste
  • salt and pepper to taste

Creamy Tahini Dip –

  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1 small lemon, juiced
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • cumin to taste
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Spicy Jicama Fries –

  • Use a large knife to cut your Jicama. I started off by hacking off a huge chunk & then used a vegetable peeler to peel off the outer skin. Takes a bit of time but peels off easily. Slice into fries.
  • Boil a pot of water with some salt. Boil the fries for roughly 10 minutes to get them a little soft.
  • Transfer to a colander & then to a mixing bowl. Add in your oil & spices. Mix evenly.
  • Heat up your air fryer to 400°F for 15 minutes. Cook in 2 batches (depending on the size of your fryer – you don’t want them to overlap too much). Shake the fries every 5 minutes.

Creamy Tahini Dip –

  • For the sauce, blend everything in a food processor & serve in a bowl.
